Companies initially had smoke in the area but were unable to locate the source. Eventually, they found smoke on the second floor in an approximately 100' x 100' portion of the structure. Firefighters assumed an offensive postures attacking the fire with 1 1/2 and 1 3/4 handlines on the 2nd floor for approximately 2 hours. Crews rotated through the attack assignment returning outside to change bottles and rehab. Several companies returned into the structure atleast 3 separate times during this period. A defensive posture using master streams was then assumed until conditions improved and allowed for entry.
The building's corrugated metal deck roof made vertical ventilation difficult and ineffective. In lieu of vertical ventilation, firefighters utilized rotary saws to remove portions of the exterior stucco walls on the rear "C" side of the building. Extensive effort was also made to perform a trench cut between the involved portion and the uninvolved 2/3rds of the building. See: http://t.co/pKSCxIxzXB Eight firefighters sustained non-life threatening injuries.
